WD My Passport (500GB) SSD Review

Western Digital provides customers with industry-leading products such as WD My Passport SSD that allow them to conveniently and securely store their data and projects, both those created by hobbyists and professionals. It doesn’t matter if a certain user wants to store family photos taken with a smartphone, download games, or safely copy materials from a photoshoot in the field – Western Digital will offer a product that is perfectly suited to meet their needs.

There are four drive models for My Passport SSD and we’ll review one that comes with a three-year warranty. These capacities are available: 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB.

What is in the box?

Inside the box, we find the Western Digital My Passport 500GB SSD and USB. The package also contains USB 3.1 Gen 2 cable and USB Type-A. (using the same cable).

Design

The WD My Passport SSD is also a nice trip. It has an anodized aluminium frame and is very lightweight when you take it up. The product feels great in the hand and fits easily into a bag or pocket, allowing customers to bring its content to life and maintain productivity.

It is also robust with shock, drop and vibration resistance (up to 1.98m) and does not cause harm to the drive-by lowering it by up to 6 feet or so. There are however no operation LEDs on the drive itself, and in the event of a driving scenario, it can be a little difficult to solve problems.

Performance and Features

The biggest improvement internally is the change from the SATA to the NVMe interiors, which means that these jumps are now rated by 1050MB/s of read speeds and 1000MB/s of written velocity from a top-level scenario of 540MB/s. The form of link is USB 3.2 Gen2, but I must point out that the USB-C cable included in the WD My Passport SSD box is incredibly short — you can leave it hanging while connected to iMac or PC or you can buy a lengthy cable. These are good with laptops as they are on the table, but the cable is so small that the WD My Passport SSD cannot rest on the table when attached to Lenovo Legion USB ports.

WD Discovery Welcome screen

Western Digital preloaded My Passport SSD with the WD Discovery software for Windows and macOS that allows you to set up the backup for your computer devices, such as the Apple macOS or Windows, as well as check your drive’s health.

When you try installing the WD Discovery Software it will pop up a prompt asking you if you would like to share app activity and crash info with Western Digital for product improvement. if you select “Do Not Share” your installation process will fail even when I retried multiple times it didn’t work. Until I finally accept by clicking “Share Info” the installation process worked. Why give options when you know the consumer’s request of not sharing info won’t be accepted? Well, you can remove it after installation by unticking this product sharing option in the settings.

After the installation process, you can open the WD Discovery software and follow the prompt to complete to set up the account.

The WD My Passport SSD series also offers a set of cutting-edge features and technologies:
– NVMe technology provides data read speeds of up to 1050MB / s and write speeds of up to 1000MB / s, allowing content creators, artists and hobbyists to work comfortably and productively.
– Password protection of content and AES 256-bit hardware encryption
– Software that allows you to easily back up large files to disk or the data cloud.
– Ready to work with Mac® and PC computers (no additional software installed).
