You can now chose not to receive unsolicited messages from your network provider

Anyone who subscribes to one or all of the five network providers in Nigeria, will not be a stranger to the constant barrage of your phone/gadget with unsolicited messages from these network providers. Every message tries to sell you something or get you to subscribe to something and drains your precious battery charge. Sometimes, they even raise and dash hopes, students and salary earners will identify with this fact better, as they both expect allowee or salary at month end. Well, the list of the inconveniences can not be mentioned by one person, so feel free to add some in the comment.

That said, the Nigerian Telecommunications commission, has observed the inconvenience posed by these unsolicited messages and decided to reach an agreement with the network providers. This agreement creates a back door, “the do not disturb function” for individuals who do not want these messages to exit from. I am guessing nearly everyone will make use of this back door.

To make use of the new function a 2442 short code was created. Now you can SMS “STOP” to 2442 to end all form of unsolicited messages from your network provider.

Below are the various options:
“SMS 1” for receiving SMS relating to Banking, Insurance/ Financial products to 2442.

“SMS 2” for receiving |SMS relating to real Estate to 2442.

“SMS 3” for receiving SMS relating to Education to 2442.

“SMS 4” for receiving SMS relating to Health to 2442.

“SMS 5” for receiving SMS relating to Consumer goods and Automobiles to 2442”.

“SMS 6” for receiving SMS relating to Communication/ Broadcasting Entertainment/IT to 2442.

“SMS 7” for receiving SMS relating to Tourism and leisure to 2442.

“SMS 8” for receiving SMS relating to Sports to 2442.

“SMS 9” for receiving SMS relating to Religion to 2442.

This new development is very much welcomed and the NCC should be applauded for it. However, much still needs to be done, especially in the way of receiving unsolicited calls from these Telco’s and pop-up messages. Unsolicited calls have a list of its own menace, which can create a post of its own. Anyways, let us hope all these user inconveniences get sorted out soon. What do you think boutique think new development? Is it enough or more needs to be done?
