Sony records $ 1 billion profit, with low mobile sales.
Sony has released record of their Q3, 2015 earnings, which was better when compared to the Q2 (Second quarter) of 2015. According to analysis, the improvement was credited to strong PlayStation sales, however, mobiles sales fell by 14.7 percent.
In all, Sony made ¥2.58 trillion ($21.5 billion) in revenue, with an operating profit of ¥202.1 billion ($1.69 billion). Net profit was at ¥120.1 billion ($1 billion), 33 percent higher than Q2 2015.
The company attributed the 14.7 percent decline in mobile sales “was due to a significant decrease in smartphone unit sales resulting from a strategic decision not to pursue scale in order to improve profitability”. In contrast, the PlayStation department saw sales increase by 10.5 percent, taking their revenue to ¥587.1 billion ($4.89 billion).
Sony pictures, a franchise also owned by the Japan based company, recorded a good profit, posting revenues of ¥262.1 billion ($2.18 billion) resulting in a YoY growth of 26.9 percent. The company’s image sensor business — the supposed growth driver for Sony for several quarters, posted low sales in Q3. Sony attributed the decrease in sales to a fall in sales of digital cameras and video cameras .
