Meet ‘Obi MV1’ smartphone – A smartphone with an Igbo name

Obi worldphone has announced their latest smartphone, the Obi MV1 at the ongoing Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It is not ‘Abba made’, for those of you thinking that the device has Igbo root, for what it is worth, the ‘Abba made’ idea come to mind when I saw the news on the device for the first time.

The Obi smartphone is manufactured by Obi worldphone. The company is headed by former Apple CEO John Sculley, he was the president of Apple before Tim Cook returned. Mr John Sculley launched the ‘Obi’ line of devices last year, with the aim of meeting the needs of consumers who desire devices that are pocket friendly and also boosts productivity.

That said here are the specifications of the Obi MV1 smartphone

Operating system: The MV1 comes in two OS versions: Android Lollipop 5.1 and Cyanogen OS 12.1.1. Both versions come with the colorful Obi Lifespeed UI.

Display: The device also sports a standout floating display enforced with a Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3. The display is in High definition (720×1280 pixels), 294 ppi.

Coating: anti-finger print – Oleophobic coating .

Sound: DTS Sound, also has dual microphone for noise cancelling.

Camera: 8MP AF OV8865 rear camera with LED Flash; f/2.2 aperture; Auto-Focus; records 1080p @ 30fps and a 2MP front camera

Processor: Qualcomm SnapDragon 212 with 1.3 GHz quad-core processor with Adreno 304 GPU.

Memory: 2GB RAM with 16GB internal storage or 1GB RAM with 16GB internal storage, both have are expandble up to 64GB via MicroSD.

Battery: 2500 mAh – Lithium polymer (Li-Po). Stand-by -13/10 days (2G/3G). Talk time -16/3 hours (2G/3G). Web Browser – 5.5/6 hours (3G/Wi-Fi), Music Play – 28 hours (speakers),Video Play – 8 hours (speakers).

Sensor: Accelerometer (gravity) proximity, ALS (light)

Communication – Easy-access, dual SIM (Micro and Nano), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, dual band, Wi-Fi direct. Bluetooth – v4.1, A2DP. GPS – A-GPS/ GLONASS. USB – microUSB v2.0.

Aesthetics – Polycarbonate body with anti-fade UV coating, smudge-free matte finish, and floating (“raised”) glass display

Obi MV1’s specs firmly places it as a low-end device, with some good features. The price tag pf the device is pegged at $139 (Under/over 30k, depends on exchange rate) for the 1GB RAM variant and $149 (Under/over 30k,depends on exchange rate) for the 2GB RAM variant of the device. The phone will go on sale immediately in African and Asian markets. Although, considering the phones seeming partial/total absence in the Nigerian market, I can not say if it is being sold here in Nigeria – I haven’t seen anyone using it.
