MediaTek confirms security breach in Android KitKat devices

Taiwan-based company, MediaTek, has confirmed recent rumours suggesting that MediaTek powered devices running on Android KitKat are exposed to attacks due to a bug.

According to details provided by the bug discoverer, Justin Case, devices running on Android KitKat can be remotely accessed by an attacker. The attacker can enable root access on an affected device, thereby, allowing the attacker access to information that is not meant for the attacker. Furthermore, the attacker can brick your device as well as access secured data protected from the user and system apps.

MediaTek ascertained the clams of Jason Case by saying that the bug appears in a debug software that is created for telecommunication inter-operability testing in China, and that smartphone makers should have disabled the debug feature before putting the devices on sale. MediaTek further stated that “after investigation, we found that a few phone manufacturers didn’t disable the feature, resulting in this potential security issue.”

The defect affects only MediaTek powered devices running on Android KitKat, who’s company did not turn of the debug feature. The Taiwanese company did not release a list containing the smartphone brands, whose devices are affected. The company only stated that all manufacturers have been alerted. Well, if you are under this category of persons, do well to take protective measures.

Besides this glitch that we know of, MediaTek have being provided good and cheap stuff for sometime now. Their processors are found in most Android devices, known as one of the best mobile SoC companies. MediaTek’s Helio X20 flagship SoC is expected to arrive in the coming weeks, which will certainly be integrated in upcoming phones later this year. The Helio x20 is 64 bit deca-core chip set and is rated well by Benchmark results.
